I was born in our ancestral home "up the hill" in
D'Escousse, Nova Scotia, in 1944. My Adopted sister Yvonne and infant brother
Lloyd had both died previous to my birth, so my sister Catherine was the only
living child with my parents, upon my birth. We remained in the house my
father had inherited from his father, until we moved to Halifax after the
birth of our baby sister Matilda. By this time my Parents had 5 girls.
My earliest memories of living in that house were
of a man by the name of Joe Kyte, who sold Rawlies products door to door.
He would sell his products which consisted of salves, vitamins, cleaning
products and God knows what, all over Richmond Co. He spent all his time
traveling, and when he walked in the door he would always ask, "could you
spare a cup of tea"? He was always so tired, he would fall asleep while he
was making his pitch to sell his products. Mom always bought some little
thing from him, because he just wouldn't leave until you did. People missed
him when he retired many many years later. He had to be close to 90 years
old by that time.
